Woodlawn 2023 Three Wishes Vineyard Pinot Noir

Woodlawn is the premium wine brand from Ricky Evans, the talent behind the Two Tonne Tasmania and Havilah labels, and comprises small-batch, single-site releases of pinot noir and chardonnay from the Tamar Valley. All are sold in heavy bottles sealed with wax with strikingly stark labels. A serious statement. This one comes from the Three Wishes vineyard planted by the Whish Wilson family over 25 years ago. It is made in the small winery at Evans' Woodlawn farm. Dalrymple 2024 Single Site Pipers River Pinot Noir

 

Here’s a great combo. One of Australia’s leading wine families; top-quality Tasmanian grapes and talented winemaker Pete Caldwell. This is one of a pair of uber-impressive new release single-site Tasmanian pinots from Hill-Smith family-owned Dalrymple: this one from the winery’s home turf in Pipers River in the far north, the other from the Coal River Valley in the south. From a warm - for Tasmania - year, it has dark cherry and spice notes, is ripe and bright with well integrated oak. It pulls off the neat trick of being intense and elegant at the same time. Jansz 2021 Vintage Cuvée

 

Looking for a treat for Mother's Day? Jansz has always been one of the "go to" labels for quality cool-climate Tasmanian sparkling wine at fair prices. This is a standout example - and a very good choice for just about any celebration. A classic blend of hand-picked chardonnay and pinot noir, it offers a melange of freshness and maturity - with lively citrus on the nose and hints of toasty brioche on the palate. Barrel fermentation and three years of lees ageing has added palate complexity. This would pair with a brunch by the pool, or a whole fish on the barbecue, or just for sipping on the back deck with canapes. Spring Vale 2023 Pinot Noir

 

The Lyne family has been farming at Spring Vale, on Tasmania's east coast, for over 150 years - and making wine for close to four decades. The vineyards were established in 1986, adapting historic farmland into rows of vines. The east coast is the warmest of Tasmania's sub-regions and produces wines with plenty of flavour. This bold pinot wine - mature at three years of age - has dark, rich fruit flavours and chocolate/vanilla notes not necessarily associated with the island state. It has an earthy and textural finish and would be an excellent companion for roast lamb and all the trimmings. The historic cellar door is well worth a visit. $58.springvalewines.com

Resolution Vineyard 2025 Pinot Noir

Resolution Vineyard is something of a wine secret, even to locals in southern Tasmania. The tiny one-hectare property, planted 24 years ago, is tucked away in the hills overlooking the d'Entrecasteaux Channel and Bruny Island - next to the local cemetery outside the hamlet of Middleton. The vineyard, owned and operated by the Lamont family, grows only pinot noir and production is the hundreds of bottles, not cases. I tasted this young release, vinified by Alain Rousseau at Frogmore Creek, just after it had been bottled and it needed a couple of hours to relax and show at its it best. Stoney Vineyard 2023 Pinot Noir

 

From the David Walsh stable; Moorilla Estate/Domaine A, this is a very stylish pinot noir from the Stoney Vineyard in the Coal River Valley. Winemaker Conor van der Reest has conjured up a very elegant wine, what we used to call feminine, with classic cool-climate pinot character, well balanced flavour and a very smooth finish. This is one of those wines that just evaporates in your glass. Think cherries, chocolate notes, ginger, Asian spices but with a very sexy, soft finish. Pair with Chinese roast duck. Holyman 2024 Pinot Noir

 

If you are looking for a light, fun and frivolous pinot noir then you have come to the wrong place. This is a powerful, assertive pinot that has much in common with its rucking and rolling cousins from Central Otago, Even at just 12% alcohol this is a rollicking good time in a glass and it could well be considered as a cellaring prospect if you are that way inclined. Made from grapes grown on 39-year-old unirrigated vines in the Holyman family's estate vineyards in the Tamar Valley, and matured in new and newish) French oak. Tamar Ridge 2024 Single Block Pinot Noir Rosevears

 

An impressive single block pinot from Tamar Ridge's Rosevears vineyard on the eastern side of the Tamar Valley - great work by winemaker Tom Wallace and his team. It was sent to me to celebrate a new deal that sees Oatley Fine Wine Merchants named the exclusive distributors of the Tasmanian wines from Tamar Ridge and Pirie, but the sheer quality will be of more interest to most drinkers. It has the style and poise common to cool-climate pinots from Tasmania, along with power and structure more often associated with Central Otago, as the 2024 vintage was a warmer one. Think plummy flavours, hints of spice and fine tannins. Can be enjoyed now with game dishes, or cellared for up to a decade. $110. https://www.tamarridge.com.au

Two Bud Spur 2020 Pinot Noir

Here’s a mature Tasmanian pinot noir from the deep south that delivers some delicious cool-climate characters. There is depth of flavour here, but also a silky smooth finish. It is not often you find a five-year-old current release pinot, and this one is drinking particularly well. The Two Bud Spur vineyard is located at Gardners Bay, outside Cygnet, in the ultra-cool Huon Valley. It is operated by Craig Mundy and Karen Miller, a pair of marine biologists who bought the vineyard in 2006 and have since built their own winery and cellar door (open seasonally). The fruit was open vat fermented in small batches and spent 12 months in French oak barrels (50% new) and 12 months in stainless steel, Impressive - and made in tiny quantities. $45. https://twobudspur.com.au/

Small Island 2024 Coal River Pinot Noir

 

Here's a pinot noir with a real spring in its step. There's plenty of weight here but also some lively savoury notes. James Broinowski started by crowd-finding his first release but is now a decade into his winemaking career. This new release is made from fruit sourced from two different sites in the Coal River Valley just outside Hobart. Made in small batches at the Dr Island facility at Cambridge, this is midway between middleweight and light-heavyweight if you are a boxing fan. There is impressive structure here, just a lick of saltiness, and I suspect this will cellar for a few years. Holm Oak 2021 Hotshot Pinot Noir

 

A rather bland label disguises the flagship pinot noir from family-owned Tamar Valley winery Holm Oak. At four years of age, this has developed in to a lovely wine that combines power and poise in the style of Central Otago. Made from small batches of estate fruit and produced only in outstanding vintages, this has impressive structure thanks to the use of whole bunch material. The fruit was basket pressed and matured in French oak (50% new) for 14 months. The end result: complexity and style and a balance between dark red fruits, deli and undergrowth notes, allied to that intense concentration. $130. https://www.holmoakvineyards.com.au/
