Made from chardonnay sustainably grown in the cool Coal River Valley, this spent 10 months in oak - no malo - and was released unfined to retain maximum character. This has some lovely, lively fresh white stone fruit flavours allied to some hazelnut characters and bright and breezy natural acid. It made a very amiable partner for a grilled pork chop. Pirie's obsession with minutiae means that his wines are always seriously good - as is the case with this new-release pinot noir from his tiny vineyard at Lebrina in the north of state. This is a classic, aromatic and intellectual cool-climate pinot with layers of flavour across the palate. There are multiple textural elements in a wine which is already appealing, but I suspect will reward medium-term cellaring. Classic red fruit flavours lead the way here along with some gentle forest floor funk and soft but obvious acidity on the finish. French oak barrique maturation has added style and substance. Pirie suggests pairing with roast chicken, I went with roast lamb en croute. $65. https://www.apogeetasmania.com/

Winsor Dobbinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15212861404097138307noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1185283905585382859.post-32361962276266269112024-02-29T13:00:00.000-08:002024-03-05T19:34:30.004-08:00Resolution Vineyard 2023 Pinot Noir

There are boutique wines, and there are boutique wines. They don't get much more niche than the Resolution Vineyard 2023 Pinot Noir - released this week from a one-hectare, pinot-only vineyard at Middleton in Tasmania's far south. This is so niche that only 50 cases were produced, so it might pay to be swiftly off the mark for this darkly coloured pinot with its dark cherry flavours and bright, crunchy acid on the palate; a wine that is full of youthful verve. It is made from vines that are now over 20 years old, grown on a hillside with views of Bruny Island. $45. https://www.resolutionvineyard.com.au/
Winsor Dobbinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15212861404097138307noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1185283905585382859.post-86042988553851257002024-02-22T15:54:00.000-08:002024-02-22T15:54:48.752-08:00Stoney Rise 2022 Pinot Noir

It is hard nowadays to find a decent bottle of Tasmanian pinot noir for under $50. Production costs are high, most producers are small scale, and demand has rocketed over the past few years. Thank goodness, then, for Joe Holyman and his Stoney Rise label, which offers value with a capital V. There is immediate drinking pleasure on offer here with a pinot made from a blend of 85% estate and 15% grower fruit. You don't need to think too much about this one; it is effortlessly drinkable with plenty of bright red fruit flavours and impressive drive. Maturation in old oak puncheons has added palate interest. It's made from cabernet sauvignon for heaven's sake. It is 10 years old and still on sale through cellar door. And it is a triumph for lovers of classic Bordeaux-style wines, a tribute to the foresight of the late Peter Althaus who realised that his little hotspot vineyard in the Coal River Valley could enable grape varieties like cabernet and merlot to shine on the Apple Isle. This is a mature textural and savoury wine, certainly, but it retains intensity and style alongside its secondary characters. Oh, and if you are in Tasmania, the Bream Creek cellar door is one of the best in the state. $50. https://www.breamcreekvineyard.com.au/Winsor Dobbinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15212861404097138307noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1185283905585382859.post-76886751163070408112024-01-04T15:08:00.000-08:002024-01-04T15:08:00.139-08:00Holm Oak Vineyards 2022 Pinot Noir

Wine lovers across Australia just can't get enough of cool-climate pinot noir from Tasmania, with premium bottlings selling for three-figure sums and often sold out within a few months of release. The Jones family has been farming in the Jordan Valley, north of Hobart, since 1818. They planted vines on top of a hill overlooking the Jordan River in 2017 and are already being rewarded with some quality fruit. This rosé is made from 100% estate pinot noir fruit and is vinified at Ghost Rock in the north of the state, it is partially oak fermented in older barrels (40%) and lees stirred. It is aromatic with seductive strawberry and cream notes and is a perfect wine for enjoying chilled on a warm spring or summer day; fresh, vibrant and fruity, with a crisp, dry finish. We enjoyed this with a mild vegetable curry, but it would be equally good with a picnic, or some Lebanese treats. Very impressive. $32. https://invercarronwines.com.au/

Winsor Dobbinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15212861404097138307noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1185283905585382859.post-80825441260971816672023-10-19T16:01:00.001-07:002023-10-19T16:01:00.149-07:00Moores Hill 2023 Riesling

Tasmania has a reputation for excellent sparkling wines, along with stellar cool-climate chardonnays and pinot noirs. Less well known are the Apple Isle's high-velocity rieslings, many of them alive with bright acid and lively citrus flavours. As this one is. It would be a very good partner for oysters, or some pan-fried flathead. Good work from new Moores Hill owners James Oliver and Constance Olivier, who arrived from the Yarra Valley to take over in the middle of last year. They have not missed a beat - maintaining Moores Hill's reputation as one of the stars of the Tamar Valley. $36. www.mooreshill.com.auWinsor Dobbinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15212861404097138307noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1185283905585382859.post-77461472754099955252023-10-12T00:48:00.006-07:002023-10-12T00:48:59.824-07:00Jansz NV Premium Cuvee

Looking for a high-quality Tasmanian sparkling wine at an affordable price point? This delivers in spades and would be perfect for a Christmas party, or a small gathering with friends. I tasted this with winemaker Jen Doyle recently and we agreed it is a perfect aperitif choice, with lemony citrus notes and just a hint of creaminess. It would be terrific with freshly shucked oysters, or hors d'oevres, with its freshness and vibrancy. Lovely stuff. Shop around and you'll find it for $30 or under.

Winsor Dobbinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15212861404097138307noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1185283905585382859.post-46767649213663398532023-10-05T15:55:00.000-07:002023-10-05T15:55:00.144-07:00Dalyrymple 2022 PM Pinot Meunier

Dalrymple winemaker Pete Caldwell has a formidable reputation for high-quality chardonnays and pinot noirs, but this is his first release of a wine made solely from the third pillar of the Champagne triumvirate, pinot meunier, which rarely takes centre stage. Caldwell describes PM as "elegant, luscious, and seductive" and this is a wine for enjoying in its youth - it could even be lightly chilled over summer. The variety has clearly taken to cool-climate Tasmania, producing a bright, fruit driven wine with strawberry and raspberry flavours to the fore, along with some typically Tasmanian bight acidity. Oak plays a support role and malolactic fermentation has added to the texture. The recommendation is to enjoy it with lighter dishes or hors d'oeuvres, or as as a aperitif. Made in tiny quantities in a difficult year, this is an outstanding tribute to Alsace, a wild fermented white blend that features pinot gris, pinot blanc, riesling and gewurztramer as its key elements. There are waves of flavours on the palate, with ripe white pear, spice notes and honeyed characters, just a smidge of residual sugar, and plenty of length with a stylishly smooth finish. A white wine that red wine drinkers will love for its complexity. All the fruit is from the Coal River Valley, just down the road from Hobart Airport, delivered by several different growers. $35. https://www.stargazerwine.com.au/Winsor Dobbinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15212861404097138307noreply@blogger.com0
